The latest Aston Villa injury news - with updates on Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara, Matty Cash and more.
Goalless Aston Villa will hope that they can finally get their Premier League campaign off the ground when they visit Everton this Saturday – but Unai Emery may have to make do without as many as five players for the trip up to Merseyside.
We have the latest news on Onana, Kamara, Cash and the other potentially stricken players below as well as their expected return dates when available.
Will Matty Cash play against Everton?
Right-back Cash’s international break could scarcely have been going better before he picked up an injury in the first half of Poland’s eventual 3-1 win over Finland – Cash scored two goals and was playing some his best football for his country before he was forced to come off at half-time following a thigh injury.
Poland head coach Jan Urban described Cash’s injury as “a severe bruise” to the quadriceps muscle but the damage seems to be relatively limited – Cash supposedly “wanted to continue playing [but] wouldn’t have lasted much longer” and was taken off.
The result of the knock is that Cash is a doubt for the Everton match, with Emery yet to offer an update on the player’s condition after he returned to England following Sunday’s match. He is not likely to be a long-term absentee but the potential for a dead leg means that there is some chance he is rested this weekend.
Amadou Onana & Boubacar Kamara doubts for Everton game
Two of Aston Villa’s defensive midfielders suffered similar injuries in the past fornight, with Kamara picking up a hamstring problem during the 1-0 defeat to Brentford over a fortnight ago before Onana’s own hamstring went during training, forcing him to withdraw from the Belgium squad.
Scans taken last Wednesday revealed that Onana’s issue was much the same as Kamara’s – according to The Athletic, the Frenchman is expected to return over the next week or so, meaning that he is a strong doubt for the game against Everton, while Onana will probably prove to be slightly further behind in his recovery.
The likelihood is that neither play, with Kamara closer to full fitness should he be required, although Emery has yet to confirm that. Both should be back to health in good time for the home game against Fulham on 28 September and may well be available before then.
Fellow midfielder Ross Barkley, who has yet to feature this campaign, remains short of full match fitness and is also a major doubt for the trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with no timeline yet set for his return, while 22-year-old defender Andrés García, who hasn’t featured yet this season, is also a major doubt – the club have not confirmed the nature of his injury or a timeline for his return.
