Denzel Dumfries has admitted he would relish playing in the Premier League after Gary Neville recommended him as a Ruben Amorim signing.

Defender Dumfries has been a standout player for Inter Milan since his £12.3million transfer from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021. Under the guidance of former Inter manager Simone Inzaghi, the Dutch international established himself as one of the world's top wing-backs, playing a key role by scoring 11 goals last season as Inter reached the Champions League final.

However, following Inzaghi's departure this summer, uncertainty surrounding the 29-year-old's future at the club increased, with reports stating there was a £21.6m release clause in his contract until mid-July.

Manchester United had reportedly been interested in Dumfries since 2024, with his physical dominance on the right flank, as well as his ability to both attack and defend at a high level, making him an ideal fit for Amorim's 3-4-2-1 formation.

Those links to United re-emerged this summer, as Dumfries would have been a huge upgrade on Amorim’s existing right wing-back options: Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui.

Legendary United right-back Neville even gave Dumfries his stamp of approval, saying after Inter’s thrilling Champions League win over Barcelona last season: “With the way Man United are playing with a back-five and wing-backs under Ruben Amorim, I was thinking about that right wing-back.

“I was thinking about Dumfries for United. I would like to see him in the Premier League, wouldn’t you?

"How good was he? He was unbelievable. He’s so good, so good.”

United ultimately did not place a bid for Dumfries, who has since played the full 90 minutes in Inter's two Serie A matches, already netting one goal.

However, the player has now signalled to potential suitors that he's open to a Premier League switch in the future, should the opportunity present itself. After scoring a goal in the recent 1-1 draw with Poland, Dumfries said: "The Premier League is a fantastic competition.

“I’m happy at Inter, but I think I could also do very well in England. If there were a professional opportunity, I would certainly be interested.

“The Premier League is known for its intensity, while Serie A is known for its tactical ability. These are two different approaches to football. The Champions League, however, always offers exciting clashes.”

Should Dumfries seal a move to the Premier League, he'd be joining a host of his Netherlands team-mates, with 14 members of the latest Dutch squad currently plying their trade in England.

One Dutch player not involved in the recent World Cup qualifiers was Jeremie Frimpong of Liverpool. Frimpong, also a highly-rated wing-back, was another target of United’s but joined the Reds of Merseyside for £29.5m this summer, dealing another blow to Amorim.
