Marcus Rashford bolstered his chances of playing for England in next summer's World Cup finals with a goal in the Three Lions' 5-0 drubbing of Serbia on Tuesday night.

England recorded their best win under Thomas Tuchel in Eastern Europe as they took a giant step towards confirming their spot in the World Cup. The win was their biggest win outside of England since their 10-0 victory against San Marino in November 2021.

Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi set England on their way to victory before Rashford made it 5-0 in the 90th minute. The goal was the 27-year-old's first goal for his country since October 2023.

The forward, who is currently on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, has previously admitted his desire to be part of the England set-up for the World Cup at the end of the season.

His call-up to the recent squad had raised eyebrows but the United loanee would argue he has done enough to warrant another chance in the October international break.

After scoring for his country, Rashford took to his private Instagram page to react. Posting an image of him celebrating his goal, taking the penalty and applauding the travelling supporters in Belgrade, he wrote: "5/5. Great way to close the International break. Always an honour to represent England."

The post was met with a resounding reception from his former teammates. Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Joshua Zirkee, Rasmus Hojlund, Tyrell Malacia, Diogo Dalot, Leny Yoro, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Chris Smalling and Facundo Pellistri were among the 390,000+ accounts to 'like' the post.

Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and Tosin Adarabioyo also liked the post.
