JACKSON, NJ — The man accused of shooting a Jackson Township woman to death on Saturday shot her multiple times while she was on the ground after his first shot knocked her down, according to court documents.
Shaquille Green, 29, has been charged with murder in the death of Toraya Reid, 28, at the Paragon Apartment complex on Larsen Road, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Police responding to a 911 call shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday about shots fired found Reid lying on her back near her black Kia Sportage near the entrance to the complex's parking lot, according to the probable cause affidavit filed against Green.
Reid had been shot multiple times and showed no signs of life, the affidavit said. There were four 10mm shell casings and a purple iPhone found near her body, the affidavit said.
The caller told police he saw a man in a black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants get into the vehicle and get back out, and then saw him walking away from the scene on North New Prospect Road toward Route 195 carrying a tan backpack, the affidavit said.
Other witnesses at the apartment complex provided similar descriptions of the man, who was later identified as Green by his wallet found in the backpack he was carrying, the affidavit said.
One man told police he heard a woman scream and then a gunshot, followed by four more, the affidavit said.
Another man told police he heard a "pop" that sounded like a gunshot and looked out the window to see Reid falling to the ground in the parking lot, and a man in a black sweatshirt and gray sweatpants then shot her while she was lying on the ground.
Another officer responding to the call saw a man matching that description running along North New Prospect Road and alerted the police dispatch. He then stopped the man, later identified as Green, and arrested him with the assistance of other officers, the affidavit said.
Officers read Green his rights and he waived his right to an attorney at the scene, the affidavit said. He told the officers he and Reid were dating and that he believed she was cheating on him, saying he saw a man leave her apartment that morning.
When the officers asked if the gun was in his backpack, Green told them they would be able to find it, the affidavit said.
At police headquarters, they read Green his rights again and this time, he requested an attorney, the affidavit said.
After getting search warrants, detectives found a 10mm Glock 20 in the backpack, the affidavit said.
Reid, the older sister of NBA star Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves, grew up in Asbury Park and was a 2015 graduate of Asbury Park High School.
"My older sister is super protective, she treats us like she's our parent," he told the Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine in December 2023.
He posted a photo to his Instagram account on Tuesday night of himself and Toraya, paying tribute to his sister.
Green, who also is charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, is being held in the Ocean County Jail in Toms River pending a detention hearing.
