The Dallas Cowboys are hosting defensive end Jadeveon Clowney for a free agent visit and workout on Wednesday, a Star-Telegram source confirmed.
Clowney, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, is once again a free agent as he searches for his seventh NFL team in eight seasons. Last season, he played for the Carolina Panthers and recorded 5.5 sacks and 46 tackles.
Clowney has 58 sacks in his 11-year career.
After sending Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in a blockbuster trade on Aug. 28, the Cowboys’ available cap space ballooned to over $40 million for this season. When asked if the Cowboys planned on using that space, head coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that they had roster freedom for the rest of the year. This would be the first major step in taking advantage of that freedom.
A three-time Pro Bowler (2016, 2017 and 2018), Clowney spent five seasons with the Houston Texans after being drafted. From there, it’s been a lot of one-year stops for the Rock Hill, South Carolina, native, as he spent 2019 with the Seattle Seahawks, 2020 with the Tennessee Titans, 2021 and 2022 with the Cleveland Browns, 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens and 2024 with the Panthers.
His 2019 season in Seahawks overlapped with Schottenheimer’s time as offensive coordinator in Seattle.
In the first game without Parsons on the roster in Week 1, the Cowboys generated pressure on 42% of the Eagles’ dropbacks, which ranked second across the NFL in the opening weekend. However, the Cowboys were only able to record one sack. Now, they bring in Clowney to see if he can help bolster their pass rush efforts.
At 32 years old, Clowney has specialized as a rotational pass rusher. In 2023, he tied a career high with 9.5 sacks with the Ravens. Availability has been a consistent issue, as he’s only played every game in two of his 11 seasons.
Clowney’s contract in Carolina was for $10 million per year after he signed the cheapest contract of his career for one year in Baltimore in 2023, $2.505 million. The Cowboys haven’t signed a free agent contract more expensive than $10 million since 2012 when they signed cornerback Brandon Carr.
