Contract talks already underway for £60m Newcastle United transfer target

Newcastle United had two bids rejected for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Jorgen Strand Larsen over the summer.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have begun contract talks with Jorgen Strand Larsen following his failed Newcastle United move.

A whirlwind summer saw the Norwegian international make his move to Molineux permanent for £23million before attracting Toon interest. Strand Larsen netted 14 goals last season in his debut Premier League campaign.

Newcastle had two bids rejected for the 25-year-old last month - the highest understood to be worth £55million. Due to his recent arrival and the club’s precarious league position, Wolves maintained a bold “not-for-sale” stance.

Newcastle United knock-on effect

Strand Larsen wanted the move, although he did not push for it in the same vein as Alexander Isak or Yoane Wissa. Wolves left the striker out of their 3-2 defeat to Everton 10 days ago.

Newcastle were in a race against time to land two strikers before the window slammed shut. Given Wolves’ hardline stance, the Magpies switched tack and swooped for Wissa and Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.

‘Every player has a price’ - Vitor Pereira

Speaking last month, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira conceded that Strand Larsen might be on the move. He told reporters: “If it's my decision, of course (he stays). Because he's a very important player. It's not only about the technical and tactical, it's about the character. He's a player with character.

"I can imagine his mind at this moment because he listens to a lot of things, reading a lot of things, and then he keeps the commitment. Until now, Jorgen is our player. We'll see what happens. I understand football. Football is football.

“Every player has a price, I believe. Even (Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo). I understand football, but for me, he is very, very important for us. We'll see what happens."

Wolves table fresh contract

The Telegraph claim Wolves have already begun negotiations with Strand Larsen over a new deal. It is noted that the Midlands club will prefer not to include a release clause after losing Matheus Cunha to Manchester United for £62.5million.

Wolves are confident a deal will be struck to fend off rival interest. NewcastleWorld understands the Magpies are content with the situation after signing Wissa and Woltemade.
