The latest team news for Newcastle United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Wolves return from the international break with a tough away trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League.
The Old Gold travel to St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon with a mission to right their wrongs after losing their opening three fixtures of the season. Newcastle, meanwhile, have lost only one but are still in search of their first victory of the new campaign.
This weekend’s hosts are undoubtedly the favourites to claim all three points but it’s honours even on the team news front, as both teams could be without a handful key players.
Newcastle team news
Starting with the hosts, Newcastle have one player definitely unavailable and that’s Anthony Gordon as he serves the second of his three-match suspension. The versatile forward was shown a straight red card in the 3-2 defeat to Liverpool on August 25, for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk.
The Toon have no others ruled out for this weekend, though three can be considered doubts, to varying degrees. New signing Jacob Ramsey is probably the biggest doubt after twisting his ankle last time out. The wide midfielder wasn’t able to continue beyond half time against Leeds.
Joelinton is another who may not be ready in time after pulling up with a groin injury against Liverpool. Howe allayed fears over a serious issue but was unsure about Joelinton’s exact return. “Joey’s scan was good, we’ll hopefully get him back for the game after the international break,” Howe said before the Leeds game.
Sandro Tonali should be fine to feature this weekend but there’s a minor doubt over whether he can play the full 90 minutes. The midfielder sustained a shoulder injury against Liverpool and, despite playing against Leeds United and for Italy during the international break, he’s still suffering.
“I spoke with the gaffer and the doctor, it was a difficult,” Tonali told NUFC TV after the Leeds clash. “I worked every day for eight hours, starting early in the morning and finishing after dinner just to play in this game. The shoulder is not 100%, it was a little bit of a risk to play but the team and the game was so important.”
Last up for the Magpies, defender Sven Botman is in fine shape after going off in the 0-0 draw at Elland Road following treatment. Eddie Howe confirmed afterwards that the Dutchman hadn’t suffered a serious injury and was instead substituted for tactical reasons. The timing of the treatment was coincidental, unless Howe was trying to pull a bluff.
Newcastle outs: Gordon (suspended). Newcastle doubts: Ramsey (ankle), Joelinton (groin), Tonali (shoulder).
Wolves team news
Onto Wanderers, and Vitor Pereira has one ruled out and three doubtful for this weekend. Leon Chiwome is the one definitely sidelined, as the young striker is not available until at least the new year after suffering a serious knee injury.
Wing-back duo Ki-Jana Hoever and Hugo Bueno are both expected to undergo late fitness tests after sustaining a knee issue and a knock respectively. Neither are first choice as it stands, so Wolves should be fine to cope without them.
One player who would be a much bigger miss and is still not confirmed to be back fit, however, is Jorgen Strand Larsen. Wanderers’ star striker, who was recently the subject of two failed transfer bids from this weekend’s opponents, missed international duty with Norway due to an Achilles tendon problem.
Strand Larsen was absent for the 3-2 defeat to Everton before the September break and Wolves will be desperate to have him back. Birmingham World understands the striker has been working well to get back to fitness, but there are still doubts over whether he can play the full 90 minutes. Pereira will update us all in due course.
Wolves outs: Chiwome (knee). Wolves doubts: Hoever (knee), Bueno (knock), Strand Larsen (Achilles).
