NBA introduces new rule

The NBA will implement a new change for the 2025-26 season: unsuccessful end-of-period heaves will now be recorded as a missed field-goal attempt for the team, not the player.

The NBA will implement a new rule starting with the 2025–26 season.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, unsuccessful end-of-period heaves will now be recorded as a missed field-goal attempt for the team, rather than for the individual player.

These long-range shots at the end of quarters will no longer negatively affect a player’s shooting percentages.

The change could encourage players to attempt half-court and beyond shots at the end of periods. Previously, some players avoided these heaves to protect their personal stats, sometimes even letting the clock expire intentionally before taking the shot.
