Nuno Espirito Santo accused of 'getting himself sacked' in Nottingham Forest exit twist

Teddy Sheringham has suggested that Nuno Espirito Santo deliberately provoked his own dismissal from Nottingham Forest by publicly criticising the club's Greek owner, Evangelos Marinakis. The Portuguese coach openly admitted last month that his relationship with the billionaire owner had deteriorated.

Marinakis responded by replacing Nuno with Ange Postecoglou this week. Sheringham, a former Forest and Tottenham striker, said: "I think the writing was on the wall once he had his little outburst about not having the same relationship with his chairman. I think he knew what he was doing so that pushed the right buttons for him to leave the club."

The ex-England forward also expressed his belief that the City Ground club have made a wise choice in appointing Australian Postecoglou. He remarked: "Good luck to him. I look back on Ange coming in at Tottenham and he said he was going to win something.

"I know how difficult it is to win something when you're a professional footballer. There's not a lot to go for every season and to win something when he said he was going to, I think hats off to him. I'm delighted he's got another job.

"I was very disappointed for him when he lost the Tottenham job. Everyone talks about the bad position in the league, but that didn't enter my mind. He put all his eggs in one basket to win something, and he won something, and that's what Tottenham had been craving has gone wrong. I think he'll do well at Forest.

"I'm sure after two years in the Premier League, he's learned a little bit as well, and he might have to adjust, but some of the football that Tottenham played last year was sensational at times in the last two years. So, you know, I wish Ange luck. I think he'll be all right."

Speaking after taking part in the pro-am at the BMW PGA at Wentworth, Sheringham said: "Who knows what's going to happen there, whether it's good or bad or what.

"I've been a good advocate of his over the years and I think he's done fantastic for the club. But you always want better. You always want more trophies, I suppose. And you know, if that's what the change is for, to improve, then so be it.

"They have just won something, so they are on the right path. You don't know the ins and outs of what has gone on so it will be interesting to see what happens in the near future."
