Alan Shearer predicts how many goals Nick Woltemade will score for Newcastle this season

Newcastle United’s £65 million man, Nick Woltemade, has been in action for Germany over the international break.

Woltemade arrived at Newcastle in the final week of the transfer window after he appeared destined to leave VfB Stuttgart for Bayern Munich at the beginning of the summer.

However, the German media scolded Woltemade following a “careless” display in the 2-0 loss against Slovakia as he failed to register a single shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.

The 23-year-old scored 17 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions last season, and he will be expected to hit the ground running at St James’ Park following the departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

And now Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has shared his prediction of how many Premier League goals Woltemade will score for the Magpies.

Nick Woltemade will score 25 Premier League goals for Newcastle

When discussing the latest international fixtures on The Rest Is Football podcast, Micah Richards shared his thoughts on the state of the current Germany squad.

“Now, if you go through their squad, they don’t have all the players at Bayern Munich and Dortmund, they’re all over the place at this moment in time. I think they’re just coming through the next batch, Germany, and I find it difficult to show exactly what they can do.”

Shearer replied: “Well, they’ve got a great centre forward who’s about to score 25 (goals) in the Premier League as well for Newcastle.”

Woltemade was relatively unknown outside of Germany before last year – he scored only two goals for Werder Bremen in the 2023/24 season before moving to Stuttgart.

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeneß recently accused Woltemade of joining Newcastle for financial reasons, rather than for sporting merit, following the Bundesliga champions’ failed pursuit of the forward this summer.

Indeed, Woltemade is turning heads at Newcastle with Eddie Howe in particular excited by the prospect of working with the striker and hopeful he can continue his meteoric development at St James’ Park.

The German will, of course, fight for a starting berth in the North East after Yoane Wissa completed his move to Newcastle on deadline day – the pair will compete to lead the line this season.

How does Woltemade compare to Wissa and Isak?

Newcastle’s loss of Isak on deadline day was a massive blow to the club, but arguably, Howe’s squad is in a much stronger position now.

The arrivals of Woltemade and Wissa were covered by the British transfer record fee, which was recouped for Isak with a £5m surplus.

Rank (2024/25 season) Player Appearances Goals Assists G+A Total

1. Alexander Isak 42 27 6 33

2. Yoane Wissa 39 20 4 24

3. Nick Woltemade 33 17 3 20

And while the Swede outperformed his two replacements last season, combined, the pair are more than capable of filling the goalscoring void at St James’ Park.

Based on last season’s output and Premier League experience, it is likely Wissa will initially lead the line in the North East, but it will surely only be a matter of time before Woltemade mounts a serious challenge to his starting berth.
