Apparently, all it takes is two international games for a complete change of though, at least if you’re Mario Basley discussing Nick Woltemade’s move to Newcastle United.
[The German edition of GOAL](https://www.goal.com/de/listen/niclas-fuellkrug-als-mahnendes-beispiel-hat-nick-woltemade-mit-seinem-wechsel-zu-newcastle-united-einen-grossen-fehler-gemacht/blt40c061969a39c073) cover comments from Basler today, made on his podcast Basler ballert, in which he completely changes his tune about the move.
Woltemade is facing plenty of criticism this week after struggling in the international break for Germany. Indeed, he was booed off of the pitch when substituted in the 63rd minute of the win over Northern Ireland, despite bagging an assist in that game.
Germany fans appear to be expecting more from the striker, especially now that he is valued at €85m after his deadline day move to Newcastle United as a replacement for Alexander Isak.
Most have questioned that transfer fee, with Basler one of those to have done so, insisting on his podcast at the end of last month that Stuttgart had done superbly to get such a fee.
On that episode, [relayed by Sport 1](https://www.sport1.de/news/transfermarkt/2025/08/mario-basler-uber-woltemade-transfer-der-fc-bayern-hat-das-zu-recht-nicht-bezahlt), he also insisted that he had no worries about the striker in England and the Premier League.
“He does not need to worry about the Premier League,” he said.
“When you see his figure, see his body: he gets through it. A player with his size is not so easy to throw around. This should not be a problem at all for him to be in England.”
Now, though, it appears he had changed his tune completely and believes the move to Newcastle was the complete wrong move for the striker to make.
“Uli Hoeneß was right in Doppelpass: Woltemade isn’t worth €90 million. And he’ll have big problems in Newcastle,” he said.
“I don’t think Woltemade will prevail in Newcastle. In my opinion, this move was the wrong one for Woltemade.
“Either he should have stayed in Stuttgart for another year, or he should have gone to Munich. It all happened very quickly. An offer came in, and he was gone immediately.
“I think that was a big mistake for the career of this young man, who certainly played a great six months. I think it was the wrong move. It wasn’t the step for his career that would move him forward.”
