Broncos owners explain why Burnham Yard picked for new stadium site

The Denver Broncos made huge news on Tuesday morning.

The team announced Burnham Yard as the preferred site for an incredible new stadium. The goal is to open it for the 2031 NFL season, with a retractable roof and the project to be privately funded.

On social media, the Broncos released a series of things explaining this decision, but perhaps the most interesting is a video that features owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton-Penner.

These are the initial quotes from the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group (WPFOG) explaining why Burnham Yard was picked over the likes of Aurora and Lone Tree. Denver city officials were also interviewed in this clip.

“This is a really important milestone. But we have a long way to go. We've got to roll up our sleeves and get to work.” – Broncos Owner & CEO Greg Penner

“It’s our goal to have world class facilities for this team and for our fans, obviously with rich tradition and history at Mile High. And find something that the fans would love as a site that had proximity to that and Denver,” Greg Penner said.

Clearly, keeping the team within the city was a priority for the WPFOG.

“We couldn’t be more excited about Burnham Yard as the preferred site to build a new stadium and an incredible year-round destination,” Greg Penner said.

Carrie Walton-Penner talked about being an important part of the community, something the Broncos have been for a long time and will continue to be.

“One of our goals is to be a really good partner across the community. We really have tried to do that since we arrived three years ago, aspiring to be the best team to play for, to work for and to cheer for,” Carrie Walton-Penner said. “We want to create an amazing venue for our fans as well as for our players.”

For Greg, he always knew that Burnham Yard was a strong option as the future home of the Broncos.

“The first time we stepped on the site there was a real appeal going back to the history of Burnham Yard and the rail which is an important part of Colorado history,” Greg Penner said.

And Carrie made it clear, this isn’t just a stadium. It’s going to be a lot more than that, with plenty of entertainment options as well.

“It’s not something that will just have a large parking lot all around it. Really creating some place that’s special that people leave and talk about and say ‘oh my gosh, when you come to Denver you’ve got to be at Burnham Yard.'”

Finally, Greg reminded everyone this is still a long journey with many steps along the way. But there’s no doubt that Sept. 9, 2025 will go down as an important day in Broncos history.

“We’ve got a long way to go, we’ve got to roll up our sleeves, get to work. I think it’s really important to have an open and transparent process as we go through the next couple of years of planning. We’ll get lots of input from others in the community and we’re looking forward to that,” Greg Penner concluded.
