The New York Jets are cutting wide receiver Xavier Gipson after his costly fumble against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Gipson had the ball punched out by Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell and it was subsequently recovered by wide receiver Ben Skowronek.
Gipson had been with the team over the last two seasons, but has ten total fumbles. Known for returning kicks and punts, that is an alarming stat, and new head coach Aaron Glenn is making it clear they will not tolerate that.
Glenn was pointed in his criticism for Gipson after the game, stating game-losing mistakes would not be tolerated in the organization moving forward.
"Man, we can’t have turnovers,” Glenn said. “We can’t do it. We have to be a more disciplined team. ... That’s something that will be addressed. You will not be on the field with this team if you’re going to cause us to lose games.”
The Jets signed Isaiah Williams off the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, and he is expected to be their returner. Their other preferred returner, Kene Nwangwu, suffered a hamstring injury during the game and could miss time.
