Opinion: Eddie Howe simply must start £39m Newcastle United player against Wolves

Eddie Howe is destined to change his formation when Newcastle United face Wolves on Saturday.

In their previous game against Leeds, Newcastle United utilised a 3-5-2 formation. That was because of Will Osula’s inclusion, with Eddie Howe keen to get as many players as possible close to the inexperienced forward.

However, that will not be necessary. Osula is unlikely to start, with Yoane Wissa expected to make his Newcastle debut as a starter.

The 29-year-old’s inclusion should result in the Newcastle United manager reverting back to his trusted 4-3-3 formation, which should be good news for Harvey Barnes.

Harvey Barnes must start for Newcastle United against Wolves

With a return to 4-3-3 likely, Howe must restore Barnes to his starting XI.

The £39million winger was dropped to the bench at Elland Road, as the Magpies tried something different. It did not work, with Newcastle and Leeds drawing 0-0.

The arrival of Wissa should bring goals to this Newcastle side, while that is also what Barnes can provide. He found the net nine times last season, but is yet to open his account for 2025/26.

Up against a Wolves side that has conceded eight goals already this season, the joint-most in the Premier League, Barnes should fancy his chances at breaking his duck.

With Anthony Gordon still suspended, it is vital that Barnes starts. While his start to the season has been underwhelming, this is a great opportunity for the 27-year-old to build up some confidence and hopefully kickstart Newcastle’s season.

In an ideal world, Barnes will be joined in attack by Anthony Elanga. However, that is up in the air. Howe could be minded to start Jacob Murphy, who he has been working with for the entirety of the international break.

In contrast, Elanga has been away with Sweden.

Harvey Barnes scored his best Newcastle United goal against Wolves

Newcastle United played Wolves at the exact same moment last season as well.

Their fourth game of the 2024/25 Premier League season was against Wolves, just like it will be in 2025/26. However, last season’s early encounter saw the Magpies head to Molineux.

On that day, Eddie Howe’s side came from behind to record a dramatic 2-1 victory. The fixture is best remembered for its winner, which was scored by Harvey Barnes.

The England international came off the bench to score an absolute screamer, finding the top corner from distance with his wicked right foot.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game, as Newcastle picked up three points that they probably did not deserve.

Since becoming a Newcastle United player, Barnes has scored 14 goals for the club. That one against Wolves is undoubtedly his best.
