Jets Release Veteran WR

From the second the New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn to be their head coach, he preached one thing and one thing only: Accountability.

With that in mind, it’s not a surprise to see them parting with one of their players.

“Jets are releasing WR/returner Xavier Gipson, as Brian Costello reported. Gipson lost a key fumble Sunday, and in the end, it cost him his job,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter wrote on X.

Gipson had a crucial fumble on a kick return in their 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the season opener.

Kene Nwangwu injured his hamstring early in the game, and Gipson took over for him.

Then, he fumbled early in the fourth quarter, paving the way for Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers to score another quick touchdown and take the lead.

The Jets signed Gipson as an undrafted free agent in 2023 to be their punt returner, and he beat out Jamaal Pritchett for that job this year.

This was far from the season debut he dreamed of, especially given how he fared in his NFL debut, when Rodgers was making his first start for the Jets.

He was the hero when New York defeated the Buffalo Bills in the 2023 season opener, returning a punt for a touchdown in overtime.

He leaves the team with 27 catches for 268 yards and one touchdown, along with 604 punt return yards and 1,142 kick return yards.
