Patriots defensive coordinator will be away from team for ‘unforeseen’ reasons

The Patriots will be without their defensive coordinator for the time being.

Mike Vrabel said Wednesday that Terrell Williams will be away from the team due to “unforeseen” circumstances, but noted it’s not related to the health scare he suffered earlier this year.

“It was something that just came up,” Vrabel said at Gillette Stadium. “We’ll have to run some more tests. And we think it’s best, and I think its best that he focus on that and we prepare for Miami.”

A serious health scare earlier this year kept Williams away from the team during the offseason that he called “traumatic”. He rejoined New England over the summer. The 51-year-old collapsed on the field during training camp, but chalked it up to being dehydrated.

“I was dehydrated,” Williams said in August. “That could happen to you, so drink water. That’s what you learn from that. But I feel great.”

It’s unclear if Williams will be available for New England’s Week 2 matchup against the Dolphins, but Vrabel noted he and inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr have been working with the Patriots’ staff to “make sure we’re where we need to be.”
