NBA approves coach’s challenge rule change ahead of 2025-26 season

The NBA is moving one of its coach’s challenges to Secaucus, New Jersey.

Beginning this season, when a coach challenges an out-of-bounds violation, officials at the replay center in Secaucus will determine whether a proximate foul should also be called, the league announced Wednesday.

The change, which was unanimously recommended earlier this year by the NBA competition committee and league office, was approved by the NBA Board of Governors on Wednesday.

The league made the change, it says, to speed up the replay review process.

Last season, the NBA expanded the scope of the review of a coach’s challenge on some out-of-bounds plays, allowing officials to assess a foul after the fact — under certain criteria — if they determine one should have been called. But it was the on-court crew chief who reviewed the play and, ultimately, made the decision.

Now, the decision will be made by review officials in Secaucus.
