Tyler Warren took college football by storm last year with Penn State, earning the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end. The Swiss Army Knife crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark, threw passes, ran the ball and even punted once.
Rave reviews have already started pouring in after his first NFL action.
The Indianapolis Colts’ first-round draft pick recorded seven receptions on nine targets for 76 yards in a Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins. He also rushed once for three yards and picked up five first downs.
ESPN’s Pat McAfee, a Colts punter from 2009-2016, quickly posted to social media about Warren’s debut:
“UHHHHH YEAH TYLER WARREN’S THE BEST PLAYER IN FOOTBALL,” he wrote.
McAfee has a knack for bold takes and loud arguments, as it’s what has made his Pat McAfee Show so popular on ESPN and earned him a place on the College GameDay set. But he might have been on to something, as Warren came away as PFF’s highest-graded tight end in his first NFL game.
Colts teammates have also started to praise the rookie, as veteran receiver Michael Pittman Jr. claimed Warren could have reached 200 receiving yards if the team wanted him to.
“He’s an old-school throwback; a freaking baller is what he is,” head coach Shane Steichen said.
Warren finished his Penn State career with 153 catches, 1,839 yards and 19 touchdowns in 56 games.
