With star tight end George Kittle going on the Injured Reserve with a hamstring injury, the San Francisco 49ers have signed TE Messiah Swinson to their practice squad.
Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges are assumedly expected to fill in for a majority of Kittle’s minutes, but Swinson adds another option and depth at the position.
The following release on Messiah Swinson is courtesy of the San Francisco 49ers:
The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed TE Messiah Swinson to the team’s practice squad.
Swinson (6-7, 259) originally entered the NFL after signing with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2024. In 2024, he spent time on the Packers and Carolina Panthers practice squads. After spending the 2025 training camp with Green Bay, he was waived by the Packers on August 26, 2025.
A 25-year-old native of Brookville, NY, Swinson attended the University of Missouri (2019-21) before transferring to Arizona State University (2022-23), where he appeared in 47 games and registered 28 receptions for 317 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The San Francisco 49ers waived kicker Jake Moody on Tuesday and reportedly signed Eddy Pineiro to take his place.
The Niners moved on from Moody after he missed two field goals in the season opener. A third-round draft pick in 2023, he missed a 27-yard attempt in the second quarter and had a 36-yarder blocked in the third of Sunday’s 17-13 win at Seattle.
Moody converted a game-tying field goal from 32 yards in the fourth quarter and also made both of his extra-point attempts.
