Brock Purdy is unlikely to play Sunday in New Orleans.

The San Francisco 49ers‘ injury-plagued 2025 is getting worse.

Brock Purdy, the Niners quarterback and one of the few remaining upright bodies on their offense, is unlikely to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Superdome.

Purdy is battling toe and shoulder injuries, but Shanahan said the toe injury is the one poised to cause him to miss time.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan announced the news of Purdy’s injury at his press availability Wednesday. He also stated the Purdy injury could be a multi-week injury.

He joins a list of injured Niners that includes tight end George Kittle, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, and No. 1 wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who is also on IR.

How Did Brock Purdy Get Injured?

Purdy reportedly sustained both injuries in the first half of San Francisco’s 17-13 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field on Sunday.

He did not miss a single offensive snap for the Niners, going 26 for 35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and rushed five times for 17 yards

According to reports, Purdy injured his non-throwing shoulder when he was driven into the turf in the first quarter. Shanahan said Purdy injured his toe in the second quarter when he was tackled by Julian Love.

Who Will Start At Quarterback for the 49ers?

Purdy did not practice Wednesday, and Shanahan reportedly called him “a long shot” to play this weekend.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Niners are operating as though Mac Jones will start in New Orleans on Sunday. Jones, the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots, was signed by the Niners in the off-season to back up Purdy.

Jones started seven games for the Jacksonville Jaguars a season ago and went 2-5 with 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 65.3 completion percentage in Trevor Lawrence’s absence.

In 52 games, and 49 starts, Jones is 20-28 with 10,590 yards and 54 TDs and 44 interceptions in his five-season NFL career with the Patriots and Jaguars.

Jones won the Patriots’ starting quarterback spot as a rookie in 2021 and went 10-7 and guided them to the playoffs his rookie year. But he has won just 10 games since and has a 32-31 touchdown-to-interception rate over his 35 games since.

What 49ers Are Injured?

The Niners are one of the league’s most talented teams when healthy, yet they are far from 100 percent, especially with wideout Demarcus Robinson also serving a three-game suspension.

Purdy somehow led the Niners to a come-from-behind win on their final drive, despite Kittle’s hamstring injury after just 21 snaps that caused him to miss the entire second half Sunday.

Kittle joined second-year 49ers wideout Jacob Cowing on IR. Plus, No. 2 wideout Jauan Jennings, like Purdy, did not practice Wednesday, and he, running back Jordan James and wide receiver Jordan Watkins are all listed as questionable for San Francisco’s second straight road game.

Luckily for San Francisco, running back Christian McCaffrey, who appeared on the San Francisco injury report last week mere days before its game in Seattle with a calf injury, appeared OK and did not have an injury distinction ahead of Week 2.
