Playoff run: The Drillers' magic number to clinch a Texas League playoff berth remained at 4 after a 7-4 loss against Arkansas on Wednesday afternoon at ONEOK Field. Any combination of Tulsa wins and Wichita losses totaling 4 would results in Tulsa qualifying for the playoffs. Tulsa has four games left and Wichita had five entering Wednesday night.
It was a costly loss for the Drillers, who had ace Jackson Ferris on the mound. Ferris didn't allow a hit through four innings and gave up two runs in five as the Travelers were helped by two throwing errors. Tulsa's 145 errors this season are the most in Double-A.
Tuesday's recap: The Drillers won the series opener 4-3 Tuesday night on Sean McLain's RBI single off the left-field wall in the 13th inning. Tulsa is 13-9 in 22 extra-inning games -- the most in Tulsa pro baseball history. The previous record of 18 was set in 1942. Arkansas' 22 runners stranded were the most ever by a Drillers opponent.
Future stars: The Drillers received on Tuesday the Los Angeles Dodgers' top two prospects -- outfielders Josue De Paula and Zyhir Hope -- from High-A Great Lake. Both played in the Futures Stars game in July, and De Paula was the MVP. Also added from Great Lakes was pitcher Cam Day. De Paula and Hope are off to a tough start with Tulsa as they are a combined 0-for-14 in their first two games. Day allowed one run in one relief inning Wednesday.
Switch-pitcher excels: In Tuesday's game, Arkansas starter Jurrangelo Cijntje shut out the Drillers in his six-inning outing. He allowed two hits and struck out seven. Cijntje is a switch-pitcher but the natural lefty only pitched left-handed against Tulsa's Kole Myers, who went 1-for-2 against him. The Drillers' lineup had four other left-handed batters. Cijntje has a little more velocity as a right-hander, reaching the high-90s (mph). He is scheduled to start again in the Drillers' regular-season finale Sunday. There has only been one switch-pitcher (except for a cameo by Greg A. Harris in 1995) in major league baseball's modern era (since 1900) -- Pat Venditte (2015-20), who was a reliever.
Home attendance (63 dates): 2025: 299,404; 2024: 320,190.
