ALLEN PARK -- Taylor Decker missed Wednesday’s practice with a shoulder injury. But the Detroit Lions starting left tackle hopes to play against the Chicago Bears in this weekend’s home opener.
Decker and linebacker Jack Campbell (ankle) were the only two players to miss practice. Each player played every offensive and defensive snaps against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.
“Yeah, I didn’t practice today,” Decker said in the locker room. “Just got some stuff that I’m dealing with. Hopefully be out there on Sunday. Hopefully.”
Decker underwent surgery on his shoulder during the offseason in what he previously described as a clean-up procedure. The team’s longest-tenured player said it was something he tried to rehab through, but felt the injury needed to be addressed after coming back for OTA practices.
The left tackle finished camp on the field and, as noted, played every offensive snap in the opener. And while Detroit’s offensive line play wasn’t up to the standard many expect, Decker doesn’t feel the world is falling, because he remembers what it was like with all the negative headlines and outside talk.
“Over the past couple of years, people have asked me all the time, how does it feel getting all this love,” Decker said. “And I said multiple times, ‘It’s nice. But I remember the times when people would (expletive) on us.’ And that’s for a week like last week. I’m not going to sit here and be like, ‘Oh, my God. The world is falling because the media is saying bad stuff about me.’
“No, I remember those days. I remember when people would joke about us and clown us. All it takes, even when we’ve been winning over the years, is one off week and then all of a sudden we’re just going to get (expletive) on again. But, I remember that. I’m not going to get too high or too low with that stuff publicly.”
There wasn’t any clear word on Campbell’s status heading into the week of practice. The third-year linebacker led the Lions with nine total tackles in the season-opening loss.
Linebacker Trevor Nowaske (elbow) and running back Sione Vaki (hamstring) were limited participants after missing every practice and the game last week.
Cornerback Terrion Arnold (groin) and safety Daniel Thomas (hand) were full participants after suffering injuries in Green Bay. Arnold missed the entire second half, but the Lions said it wasn’t a serious injury despite being able to offer a firm timeline.
