The Miami Dolphins were blown out by the Indianapolis Colts in their season opener.
With the loss, criticism of Mike McDaniel is getting loud. The fourth-year head coach missed the playoffs last season, and the nature of the team's Week 1 loss is concerning.
Many expected the Colts to be an easy opponent for the Dolphins, but McDaniel's offense failed to get anything going. NFL analyst Colin Cowherd suggested the Dolphins should consider firing McDaniel and hiring legendary former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick in the offseason. Belichick is currently the head coach at the University of North Carolina.
"What about Belichick? Got a place in Jupiter, doesn't he?" Cowherd said on his podcast. "I don't think he's built for college. I've said this before. He and Mike Lombardi are NFL guys. He can't draft. How can he recruit? I don't think Belichick's crazy there."
McDaniel made the playoffs in his first two seasons, but failed to win a game. Last season was a disappointment as his team missed the playoffs and looked like a mess at times. Another poor season, despite a roster with stars, could spell the end of his time with the Dolphins.
Belichick won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the Patriots. However, his relationship with the team now is less than strong. He recently banned Patriots' scouts from attending practice at UNC. Joining the Dolphins would allow him to play the Patriots twice a year.
