CLEVELAND, Ohio — Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions were underwhelming in the season opening loss to the Green Bay Packers.
A team with high expectations, having finished with as the NFC’s top seed last season, looked anything but that this past Sunday.
But for those who are quick to write off Detroit, Goff is blunt about his thoughts regarding that.
“Don’t care,“ Goff said during Wednesday’s press conference. ”We’ve heard negative from the outside before. Is it anyone in this building? I don’t think so."
Goff accounted for 225 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception, while being sacked four times in the loss to Green Bay.
Though, Goff shoulders significant responsibility in the communication chain, and didn’t shy away from his role in the breakdown either.
“Just got to be better in the details and communicate better,” Goff admitted. “I mentioned this after the game, it starts with me. I got to communicate better and take a little bit stress off those guys in the communication aspect.”
Goff also touched on his decision making, whether or not he found his target in the small window of opportunity or not. But he also reminded the outside that it’s only the season opener.
“It‘s one game,“ Goff said. ”If there was someone downfield open and I should have thrown it, I don’t feel like there was but if there was then I should have thrown it."
Detroit had their best regular season in franchise history last year, finishing 15-2 and tied with Kansas City for the best record in the NFL.
Obviously, that run ended quicker than expected in the divisional playoff loss to Washington, but Goff feels he and his teammates are looking ahead to this season, instead of looking back.
“I think we’ve put it behind us to be honest,” Goff said. “I don’t feel like there is certainly not a narrative in here of anything about last season. I think we’re very aware that last year we had a good year, and this year we’re zero and zero, and now we’re zero and (we’re) very aware of the reality of that.”
Detroit hosts Chicago this Sunday at 1:00 p.m., and both teams come into Week 2 with a chance for their first win on the season.
