The New York Jets received a concerning injury update on Wednesday, September 10.

Head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that rookie tight end Mason Taylor did not practice due to an ankle injury.

Any injury isn’t good, but Coach Glenn confirmed that this was the same ankle that Taylor had issues with during training camp.

“Taylor, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jason Taylor, missed just over a week during training camp after suffering what the team said was a high ankle sprain. Glenn said the current issue is to the same ankle and added that the team is ‘managing’ Taylor’s injury,” ESPN’s Rich Cimini said.

Taylor Had Quiet Debut in the Jets vs. Steelers Week 1 Game

The former LSU product was targeted once through the air, and he converted that for 20 receiving yards in Week 1.

While that isn’t the kind of numbers that’ll impress fantasy football managers, there is a sneaky stat that could be a good sign of things to come.

Taylor played “54 of 62 snaps” and “ran 19 pass routes,” which was the third highest on the team, Cimini said.

#Jets rookie report:

Encouraging day for RT Armand Membou: 26 pass-blocking snaps, only 1 QB pressure, no penalties.

TE Mason Taylor played 54 of 62 snaps. Caught 1 pass for 20 yards. Ran 19 pass routes, 3rd highest on team.

In other words, if Taylor keeps playing in that manner, inevitably, he is going to see an increase in target volume. Especially considering the other offensive pieces on the team for the Jets.

The key for the Jets is making sure that this injury doesn’t linger throughout the season. If he needs time to rest it, let him rest, so he can be strong when it matters.

Looking at the Rest of the Injury Report for the Jets

For what it’s worth, Cimini provided some additional context on the Taylor injury.

“Jets injury report: Mason Taylor is the one to watch. He seemed to be moving well in the rehab area, working with the conditioning staff,” Cimini said on X previously Twitter.

If Taylor is unable to suit up, the Jets have four other tight ends on the 53-man roster. That list includes Jelani Woods, Jeremy Ruckert, Stone Smartt, and Andrew Beck.

Two other players did not practice on Wednesday for the Jets: defensive tackle Jay Tufele and running back Kene Nwangwu.

Tufele missed practice, according to the Jets, because of an “illness,” but Cimini said it was because of a “personal matter.”

Nwangwu hurt his hamstring during the Steelers game in Week 1. Head coach Aaron Glenn said it was still being evaluated. It doesn’t look good for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

Three other players to watch for the Jets were listed as limited participants in practice. That group included veteran offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor (hand), cornerback Michael Carter II (shoulder), and special teams ace Marcelino McCrary-Ball (calf).
