Man Utd wanted £35m Belgian star to replace Garnacho, Mendes involved in talks

Manchester United made a late attempt to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana after the departure of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea, according to Foot Mercato.

The Red Devils sanctioned the transfer of Garnacho to the Blues for £40 million on August 30.

The club’s hierarchy wanted a replacement, with Matheus Cunha also picking up a hamstring injury.

Foot Mercato now claim that a proposal was made ‘behind the scenes’ to Fofana’s father through super agent Jorge Mendes, who acted as an intermediary.

Fofana was tempted by the idea of joining the Red Devils. The club were waiting for a signal from his father, but it never came, and a deal did not materialise.

United could return for Fofana in January

The 20-year-old had a good breakthrough season with Lyon last campaign. He registered 11 goals and six assists from just 2,290 minutes across all competitions.

Fofana was injured for the home leg of the Europa League quarter-final against United last term, but provided an assist in the dramatic return leg at Old Trafford.

Everton tried to sign him earlier this summer, but Fofana wanted Champions League football.

It appears the left-sided winger changed his stance for the Red Devils, but United did not receive the green light from his father/agent before the deadline.

Lyon were looking for a package of £35 million to part ways with Fofana. United could have paid that on the back of permanent transfers for Garnacho and Antony.

Fofana has caught the eye with his good dribbling skills and duel-winning ability, aside from his goal contributions. He has one goal and one assist for Lyon this season.

United are likely to monitor his progress over the coming months. The club could return for his services at the turn of the year if he continues to excel for Les Gones.
