Willy Gnonto’s honest response to Leeds United’s disastrous end to the transfer window

Leeds United forward Willy Gnonto has seen three new attackers join the Whites this summer, but no more players came in after Noah Okafor in that area.

The Leeds United winger won promotion and Willy Gnonto also won the Young Player of the Season award for his efforts last year, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lukas Nmecha, and Noah Okafor are now new additions.

Crysencio Summerville is delighted with Gnonto’s progress since he left for West Ham United, but Gnonto was supposed to have even more competition for places than this. However, neither Facundo Buonanotte nor Harry Wilson signed before the deadline.

It may be of benefit to the Italian’s game time, with Gnonto expected to be one of three key Leeds players this season, especially considering the lack of creativity and flair in Leeds’ pool of forwards at Daniel Farke’s disposal.

Gnonto shone for Leeds against Everton already, even if he is yet to score. The 21-year-old has an assist for Jayden Bogle in the League Cup to his name.

He has looked impressive and Gnonto has mocked his previous efforts to leave Leeds, such has been the turnaround in his feelings towards the club in recent seasons.

However, there’s a lot of creative burden on his young shoulders now. He spoke to BBC Sport’s Adam Pope regarding the club’s end to the window, without another more creative forward signed.

Gnonto said: “I think it’s stronger. I think we got some good players, with a bit of time to work on our tactics and stuff and to get to know each other a bit more.

“I feel like we can just get better from now. I think every position is better, to be fair.

“You can just look at the back, look at the players we got. You have a player who came in and started already, so I can say that at the back we improved.

“Midfield, we improved. We have some top players there as well. You talk about Noah, but we have Dom, we have Lukas, we have so many players up front as well.

“You know, Jack [Harrison] coming back. Everyone is ready to go and ready to help the team.”

Willy Gnonto reacts to Noah Okafor’s arrival

Gnonto is outraged at his FC26 stats but the only statistics that truly matter are his goal and assist tallies, which will help go towards Leeds’ survival bid.

However, he now has more competition for places in the forward areas, even if Leeds came up short in some respects. In the same interview with Pope, he explained his feelings about Okafor’s arrival.

He said: “Good. Obviously, when you play in the Premier League, you are going to have competition. You have good players and you can’t do anything to stop this.

“I’m quite focused on myself. I’m sure of my abilities and I’m just happy for him. I know he’s a good player and he’s going to help us.”
