'A monster': David Moyes blown away by one Everton player 'behind the scenes'

Everton are now back on Merseyside following the first international break of the season.

David Moyes has enjoyed a promising start to the 2025/26 campaign, with the Toffees sat all the way up in fifth spot of the table.

Despite the opening day loss against Leeds United, Everton have quickly gotten up to speed having secured three wins from their last three in all competitions.

The deadline day signing Merlin Rohl has really impressed Moyes in Finch Farm training whilst a lot of the squad has been away on international duty.

Heading into the next round of fixtures, before October’s international break, Moyes will surely feel he has put together a squad with much stronger depth.

And there is one Everton player who the 62-year-old boss has even claimed to be a ‘monster’ behind the scenes for the Blues.

David Moyes says Seamus Coleman is a monster at Everton

Everton fans hailed Seamus Coleman during their recent Carabao Cup game against Mansfield Town.

The veteran defender played the full 90 minutes, amid the injury to Nathan Patterson, and he performed at a very high level.

Speaking to the club’s media, Moyes has now waxed lyrical about the Everton captain for what he offers away from the pitch.

“If you’re the Everton manager, the lucky part of it is I’ve got Seamus Coleman. Who behind the scenes is a monster with the boys,” said Moyes.

“He absolutely digs them out. He makes sure they all come out correct and he’s been a brilliant, brilliant ambassador for Everton’s characteristics.

“When I look back at Peter Reid and Kevin Sheedy in that team, I’m sure they weren’t all patting each other on the back and saying: ‘Well done try harder next time’.”

Coleman sang Harrison Armstrong’s praises earlier in the summer having seen the youngster fight for a place in the squad during pre-season.

Armstrong may not have secured that, but he will have certainly been pushed all the way by the veteran defender behind the scenes.

Moyes was desperate to keep Coleman at Everton

Over the summer, Everton saw a number of their players depart at the end of their contracts.

The Ireland international was one of those players who saw his future come under scrutiny, but Moyes was adamant he wanted Coleman to remain at the club.

“But Seamus will stay next season. Without any doubt Seamus will be a part of the group,” he said back in May.

“I need him here, his leadership, his message he has amongst the players in the dressing room. It would be wrong of me to let him go. So, one way or another Seamus will be here next season.”

At the age of almost 37, it will remain to be seen as to how much football Coleman plays this season for the Blues.

However, it is certain that Moyes is relying on Coleman’s leadership skills as the Toffees enter their first season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
