Crystal Palace could pay the full price for a crucial transfer decision they made in recent weeks.

Crystal Palace’s worst fear may be in the process of playing out after the whole Marc Guehi debacle. Guehi was expected to join Liverpool on deadline day, even having a medical, only for the deal to be cancelled on the count of the Eagles having failed to find an adequate replacement.

Brighton’s Igor Julio looked to be the selected replacement, but that deal fell through when the centre-back saw more a greater possibility of playing time at West Ham.

Oliver Glasner will be delighted to have kept Guehi for sporting reasons, but there are big concerns when it comes to the business side of the situation. The England international is out of contract next summer and he is unlikely to sign a new one as he looks for an opportunity to make a step up.

Guehi is also said to be unhappy with Palace over how they handled the deadline day situation, only decreasing the likelihood of him penning a new deal. Palace would likely have looked to find a replacement in January and looked to sell Guehi for some sort of fee to avoid losing him for nothing next summer, but that now looks unlikely.

Palace are now in a position where they are likely to struggle to find a buyer in January, and that means a free departure for the defender next summer is that much more likely. Palace wanted £35million for their star centre-back in the summer, and they could now face letting him go for nothing, and to a Premier League rival no less.
