One team emerges as serious threat to Rockets for Kevin Durant in 2026

Miami Heat reportedly eye Houston Rockets All-Star forward Kevin Durant for 2026 free agency.

After long trade talks surrounding Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns finally decided to pull the trigger, trading their superstar to the Houston Rockets in a historic seven-team deal.

Among the teams that were pursuing Durant was the Miami Heat. After unsuccessful trade attempts, they might still look to pursue Durant in the 2026 free agency.

According to The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, the Heat remain interested in acquiring KD, as he has always been held in high regard in Miami.

"Durant will forever be a Heat possibility if he makes it to free agency," Jackson reports.

"The Heat has always held him in high regard, but key members of the organization disagreed about which players to offer in trade negotiations with Phoenix in June."

Signing Durant could become a realistic option for the Heat next season. With several players such as Terry Rozier, Norman Powell, and Simone Fontecchio on expiring contracts, Miami could see approximately $55.3 million come off the books.

However, the Rockets could complicate Miami's plans, as they could offer Durant a two-year extension before free agency, leaving the Heat unable to get involved in contract talks with the superstar.

The 36-year-old Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists with the Phoenix Suns last season, and remains one of the top offensive players in the league.
