Fabianski’s shocking West Ham return is great for the squad

West Ham United have confirmed the sensational move to re-sign Lukasz Fabianski after Wes Foderingham left for Cyprus.

The goalkeeping position has been subject to a lot of talk and movement this summer. Alphonse Areola was deemed not good enough to be number 1, so we wanted to bring in someone that could rival him for the number one spot.

We signed Mads Hermansen from Leicester, however, after a ropey start, having two stinkers in the first two matches, doubts about his ability started to creep in. This led to talks of selling Areola and maybe bringing in yet another keeper, however, no one made a move for Areola so he remains number two at the moment.

One goalkeeper we didn’t expect to change was the third choice, however, Wes Foderingham moved to Cyprus in hopes of first-team football a couple of days ago, so we had to replace him. And who was the best goalkeeper without a club? Lukasz Fabianski. The 40-year-old Polish shot-stopper spent 7 years at the club, making 216 appearances, and he could yet make a few more with the form of Areola and Hermansen.

But in reality, as third-choice keeper he isn’t going to play one minute at all this season barring disaster. What he will bring back to the club is leadership and experience, we’ve really lacked both of those so far this season after letting him, Coufal, Cresswell and Antonio go in June. Super Fab’s return is going to be of huge benefit to the dressing room and not only that, Mads Hermansen can learn a lot from him. .

Obviously it has put up the average age of the squad again. However, we have done very well in decreasing that average age this summer with the other players released and signings of Diouf and Fernandes in particular. Even with Fabianski’s return the average age of the squad is 26.8, down from 28 last season.
