Leeds United loanee signals transfer exit wish after 'difficult' time at Elland Road

Isaac Schmidt has indicated that his ultimate aim is to move to Werder Bremen long term after a “difficult” time at Leeds United.

The Switzerland international is on a season-long loan at the German club, with his deal containing an option-to-buy clause. While the fee has not been disclosed, Leeds would gain a PSR return on Schmidt if triggered, meaning it is likely above £1.25million when amortisation is calculated.

Schmidt had a dream start to life at Bremen with a goal on debut against Bayer Leverkusen prior to the international break. The 25-year-old’s motive for his move to Germany was to get regular game time and secure his place in next year’s Swiss World Cup squad.

But even beyond then, Schmidt has signalled that he would like to stay at Bremen for longer. “I’m currently looking for an apartment so I can really settle in Bremen. I’d like to play for Werder for a longer period. That’s my big goal,” Schmidt said as relayed by Deich Stube.

“Of course, I know that a lot will depend on my performance here. I got off to a perfect start with that goal. I’ve had a difficult time as a footballer recently. So, this week did us a lot of good. That was a dream.”

Schmidt played just 71 Championship minutes last season and failed to get into any matchday squad under Daniel Farke this season prior to his exit.

The full-back arrived at Leeds from St Gallen in Switzerland on a four-year deal upon a £2.5m fee last August. He has made only 14 appearances under Farke.
