Wayne Rooney's son Kai, 15, doesn't support Man Utd despite playing for them

Wayne Rooney and Manchester United are considered synonymous at this point. The Englishman played over 550 times for the Red Devils, winning all manner of trophies, including the 2008 Champions League.

Rooney is considered one of the best signings in the club’s history, with his time at the Old Trafford outfit remembered fondly. And with a bit of luck, the United faithful might get to cheer for another member of the Rooney family somewhere down the line.

That’s because Rooney’s oldest son, Kai, is currently playing for United’s developmental team. He has previously said he one day hopes to emulate his dad by playing for the 20-time champions, but to the surprise of many, he isn’t actually a United fan.

Speaking in an interview with SY Football, he explained: “I support Everton. I know people might expect me to support Man United but it’s my dad's team and I am from there. I have a love for Man United as well but my team is Everton.

“My favourite moment was when I scored four against Liverpool…even though we lost. I was the main man and was running past defenders. But my best moment was when I scored an overhead kick against Manchester City, for the under-12s.”

Kai’s hopes of breaking through to the senior set-up have taken a blow after the 15-year-old recently shared a photo of himself in a leg brace and on crutches, captioned: “Life can’t get worse.” Many will be crossing their fingers for a swift recovery, not least dad Wayne, who has opened up about the joy of seeing his son develop as a footballer."

He told BBC Sport: "I think it's very unfair for anyone to expect him to go and do all kinds. He's just playing, he's a 15-year-old boy playing his football, enjoying it. Of course he gets different attention to a lot of his team-mates but I think he handles that really well. He has great coaches at Manchester United, so I take a stand off approach. I speak to him, but for me it's all about his mentality and his mindset, to make sure he keeps enjoying it - that's the main thing for me."
