'I looked' - Jacob Ramsey reveals key why he left Aston Villa for Newcastle United

Jacob Ramsey is keen to feel the full Eddie Howe effect at Newcastle United.

Jacob Ramsey has highlighted Eddie Howe as the main reason he wanted to join Newcastle United.

The Magpies signed Ramsey last month for £40million to bolster their midfield ranks. Sean Longstaff left over the summer and Newcastle targeted another body in the engine room to fill the void.

Howe has been keen to avoid the mistakes from two years ago when the Magpies struggled to cope with added European pressures and racked up a brutal injury list. Aaron Ramsdale, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade also beef up the ranks.

Newcastle United’s PSR revenge

Just over a year ago, Newcastle were hamstrung by PSR restrictions and faced a Premier League points deduction. Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh - their two best prospects - were reluctantly sold.

Fast forward to the present and Villa are reeling after the Magpies took advantage of their precarious situation. Both clubs have become frustrated with the financial rules, with supporters unifying on the terraces last month.

Jacob Ramsey on Eddie Howe

Speaking to Premier League Productions, Ramsey named Howe’s record of developing players as the motivation for his decision. He said: “Since Eddie joined Newcastle, I haven’t heard one person speak badly of him. In the media he comes across really well.

“I looked at the team and saw Tino, Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall – and he’s made them all better players. When I found out Eddie Howe wanted me in his team, I immediately thought Eddie Howe will improve me.”

Unai Emery fires PSR swipe

Villa boss Unai Emery aimed a dig at the current regulations while reflecting on Ramsey’s exit. He said following his exit: “I agree with the players (about PSR), with the same message they sent. I agree but…we have to move on and try to get our best.

“Of course, they are the same. They are friends and maybe they can feel a little bit sad. In football you have to move on and keep going. They are sending messages in the same direction and I agree. We have to accept the financial rules. We know it and we are trying to get a balance, between the rules and our capacity to keep improving and getting better.

“There are always three circumstances (with any potential transfer), one is the club, second is the team, then there are the player’s wishes. Those three circumstances, if there are two, it is getting the objective.

“We did everything linking those three circumstances, with the players and those who are leaving. I wish him (Jacob Ramsey) the best at Newcastle United. I really enjoyed the moment we had together. The players’ emotions are closer to thinking about him leaving.”
