**The summer transfer window has thankfully slammed shut, but that only means that attention turns to the January trading period for a lot of clubs, Newcastle United included.**
Newcastle will still have a fair chunk of change available to them after what ultimately turned out to be a good summer window in the end.
Eddie Howe is no doubt happy with the players he has at his disposal right now, but as the man often says, you can always improve.
Now, [TeamTALK](https://www.teamtalk.com/manchester-united/red-devils-competing-three-prem-clubs-midfield-signing-amorim-faces-huge-dilemma) have reported that Newcastle are among four Premier League clubs weighing up a potential raid on Crystal Palace this winter.

Adam Wharton is back on Newcastle's radar
Newcastle United want Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace
------------------------------------------------------
Newcastle are long-term admirers of Adam Wharton. The Magpies were linked with an interest in the midfielder while he was at Blackburn Rovers and have kept track of his progress following his move to Crystal Palace.
Wharton has grown into a top-class player under Oliver Glasner, and Palace will not want to lose the 21-year-old, but Newcastle, Manchester United, Liverpool and of course, Chelsea are all keen on a January raid.
The January window is notoriously difficult to do business in, especially when it's Premier League clubs selling to each other, so it may be a case that this battle is pushed to next summer.
Adam Wharton could transform the Newcastle midfield
---------------------------------------------------
Adam Wharton plays more as a deep-lying midfielder, which could allow the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali more freedom to push up the pitch and create.
He's certainly got what it takes to play for Newcastle and would definitely give Eddie Howe a selection headache. And that's before Eddie Howe inevitably improves him.
Crystal Palace are thought to value Wharton at £60 million, which should be an achievable fee for Newcastle. Let's see how this one develops. The competition for his signature is strong, and with Chelsea involved, we're not holding our breath.
