Man United released the midfielder after his contract at the club wasn’t renewed at the end of last year.
Ruben Amorim’s transfer business this summer was part of a squad rebuild of sorts at Manchester United, and he managed to transform their attack by firstly offloading the likes of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Antony, and then adding Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo.
There was a midfielder who left the club in June as his contract expired, who could have helped to fill that role, but after United rejected a chance to extend his contract, he has now moved elsewhere.
Christian Eriksen joins Bundesliga side
Christian Eriksen left United after a spell of three years at Old Trafford, and he has now joined Bundesliga side Wolfsburg after working out where his next move was going to be as a free agent over the summer.
BBC Sport say that Eriksen was training with Swedish side Malmo over the summer, but he didn’t make the move there, and the Danish international has now made his move to the Bundesliga for the first time in his career.
He’s signed a two-year contract at Wolfsburg and said: “Wolfsburg is my first club in the Bundesliga - I'm really looking forward to this new adventure. I'm convinced we can achieve something together.”
The midfielder has been able to resurrect his career despite suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, as he left Inter and joined Brentford. After showing he still has the ability in the Premier League, Man United signed him.
Eriksen was a good addition for the Red Devils as he brought both quality and experience. He made 107 appearances for United in three seasons, scoring eight goals, and winning the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup trophy.
Was it a mistake to let Eriksen leave?
One of the biggest areas of concern for United is in midfield. Fernandes takes one of the two spots in midfield, and Amorim has been rotating Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte next to him.
Kobbie Mainoo hasn’t been getting game time, and so has asked to leave the club on loan to get more minutes. So, it could have been useful for Amorim to have another option in midfield, who can come in and do a reliable job, and that player is Eriksen.
The reasoning behind letting him leave may have been that United had planned to sign a new midfielder; however, looking back in hindsight, as they didn’t sign a holding midfielder, the Red Devils may see it as a mistake to let Eriksen leave the club.
