Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered a shoulder injury in Week 1 after he collided with tight end Travis Kelce. While the hit took him out of the team’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, it doesn’t appear the wide receiver will be sidelined for long.
In a recent interview, head coach Andy Reid said that Xavier Worthy will not need surgery and that he will not spend any time on the injured reserve. While he may not play in Week 2’s contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, this language suggests he will return to the field sooner rather than later.

Andy Reid Gives Injury Update on Xavier Worthy
Assuming Worthy cannot play in Week 2, Patrick Mahomes and company will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles with a wide receiver core headlined by Marquise Brown, Tyquan Thornton, and Juju Smith-Schuster. Brown became the clear top target on offense in Worthy’s absence, finishing the night with 10 receptions for 99 yards on 16 targets. Smith-Schuster, meanwhile, finished with five catches for 55 yards while Thornton recorded two receptions for 41 yards.
While Kansas City’s wide receiver room currently leaves a lot to be desired, it should improve over the course of the season. In addition to Worthy’s eventual return, star wide receiver Rashee Rice should become the focal point of the passing attack once his six-game suspension is served. A former second-round pick, Rice established an immediate rapport with Mahomes and was on pace for a 1,000-yard season before a knee injury prematurely ended his 2024 campaign.
Of course, Mahomes also has Travis Kelce to help keep the offense afloat while Xavier Worthy recovers from his injury. While he’s not the player he once was, he still finished Week 1’s contest with two receptions for 47 yards and the team’s lone receiving touchdown.
