'Point to prove': Farke publicly calls out four Leeds United players who ‘need to step up’

Leeds United fans certainly have reservations about some of the current players, and so too does Daniel Farke.

Leeds United fans seem very mixed about the season ahead with the current first-team squad looking as though it’s really lacking in areas.

But Daniel Farke will continue to back his players: the existing ones and then the 10 who all arrived at Elland Road this summer.

Leeds United signed James Justin in what proved to be their final deal of the summer, with the full-back arriving in a £10million move from Leicester City.

It’s in attack though where the main concerns are among supporters, and Farke has admitted that he needs certain names in attack to really step up and be counted this season.

Speaking to the press on Thursday ahead of the game against Fulham this weekend, Farke was talking about Wilfried Gnonto. The Italian has so far started every Premier League game this season but is yet to claim a goal or assist in the league, with an assist in the Carabao Cup defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

Farke says Gnonto is someone who needs to step up this season. But the 21-year-old isn’t the only one. Farke said: “Not just Willy, but Daniel James also has a point to prove on this level, also Jack Harrison after a good start, back to life, also right now still on the run to win all the supporters back.

“Brenden Aaronson also point to prove… So all my offensive players also need to step up.”

Daniel Farke misses the main Leeds United player who needs to prove himself

Fans will all agree that Gnonto, James, Harrison and Aaronson all need to up their games this season.

All have had chances to prove themselves in the Premier League and not taken them. If they fail to prove they can hack top flight football this season then there’ll be huge doubts over whether they ever can.

But Farke’s main man who needs to really step up this season is Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Leeds have really taken a gamble on Calvert-Lewin: big money, a lot of injuries and poor spells of form have beset his last few years, and Calvert-Lewin’s nightmare debut for Leeds United proves just how far away he is from his best.

If Calvert-Lewin can step up then it’ll really help to bring the others up to speed as well. And if Calvert-Lewin starts scoring then Leeds’ chances of beating the drop this season all of a sudden look a lot brighter.
