Report: Everton held talks over late summer move to sign 'phenomenal' Belgian international

Everton held talks to sign Rangers star Nico Raskin during the final week of the summer transfer window, but the 24-year-old rejected a move to the Premier League, according to a report from TBR Football.

The Toffees were in the market for a new midfielder late in the transfer window, and managed to get a loan deal over the line for Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl. It was a busy few months for the Merseyside club, strengthening in a host of different positions, but adding a new midfielder came late in the window.

Thierno Barry, Jack Grealish, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Tyler Dibling were among those to have arrived through the door, with new owners The Friedkin Group investing a hefty amount of money to improve David Moyes' squad. It's been a positive start to the 2025/2026 campaign, with the Toffees winning two of their three Premier League games.

Nicolas Raskin Rangers

According to a report from TBR Football, Everton held talks with Rangers over the potential signing of Raskin late in the summer transfer window. The player rejected the move, despite falling out of favour under new manager Russell Martin. Raskin confirmed to clubs that he wants to stay at Ibrox and fight for his future, something he admitted during the international break when on duty with Belgium...

“My situation at the club is complicated. I will return, work hard, and try to get playing time again. But it’s not just up to me. I know this is an important year, and I absolutely want to be part of this campaign with Belgium. Football is simply a game of ups and downs. I absolutely love Rangers. I’ve had some great moments there and have a strong bond with the fans. I always try to give my all. A transfer? No, that’s out of the question. I want to continue to resolve this at the club.”

Alongside Raskin, described as 'phenomenal' by Derek Ferguson, being unwilling to head through the exit door, manager Martin also wanted to keep him at Ibrox, despite his lack of minutes. Considering he's still getting called up to the Belgium squad, Raskin clearly has plenty of talent, and it should only be a matter of time before he finds his way back into the side.

It will be interesting to see whether Everton look to make another move in January, especially if Raskin continues to struggle for minutes under Martin, but after the signing of Rohl, it seems unlikely that the Toffees would move for another midfielder.
