Court hearing postponed for man accused of killing NBA player’s sister in N.J.

A combined detention hearing and first court appearance for a 29-year-old man charged with killing the sister of NBA player Naz Reid in Jackson has been postponed for a week.

Judge Wendel Daniels agreed to the adjournment requested by Shaqullie Green‘s public defender, who was recently assigned to the case.

Green appeared from the Ocean County jail, where he was sent after being charged with murder and weapons offenses in the death of Toraya Reid, 28.

The detention hearing is now scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sept. 18. Green is represented by public defender Frank McCarthy.

Reid was shot and killed outside Paragon Apartment Complex just before 11 a.m. Saturday. Four 10 mm shell casings were found near her body, charging documents state.

Green said the two were in a dating relationship, according to prosecutors. He told police he thought Reid was cheating on him after seeing a man leave her apartment that morning, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

Green was arrested as he ran along New Prospect Road near Aumack Road toward Interstate 195, according to court papers.

Witnesses and a 911 caller had described his clothing to police and noted he was carrying a backpack. One man said he witnessed the shooting while another said he was in his apartment when he heard screaming and gunshots.

Officials later obtained a search warrant for the backpack and found a Glock 20, 10 mm caliber inside. A wallet containing Green’s identification was also found near the backpack.

Naz Reid, 26, starred at Roselle Catholic High School, and then played one year of college basketball at Louisiana State. He has been a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves since 2019.
