Jamie Carragher leaps to defence of Newcastle United star after Gary Neville aimed criticism…

· 11 September 2025, 18:00

**Newcastle United can boast a decent crop of England players these days, with four players already in Thomas Tuchel's thoughts and a few more on the fringes.**

We'd gone a long time not being represented in England, but now we've got Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon, who are all in the England boss's mind.

On top of those, we have Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale, who have been in and out of the England set-up. There were calls for a Jacob Murphy call-up last season, although we'll probably have to accept that it won't happen in reality.

Our other Jacob, Jacob Ramsey, is still very much in with a shout if he can stay fit and perform to the levels he was hitting at Aston Villa before his injuries.

Jamie Carragher disagreed with Gary Neville over Trent Alexander-Arnold

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Discussing England and Thomas Tuchel's selection on The Overlap, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher had a disagreement over Trent Alexander-Arnold's exclusion from the latest squad. Surprisingly, it was Gary Neville making the case for the former Liverpool man, and Mr Anfield, Jamie Carragher, defending Tuchel's decision to call up Tino Livramento.

It came to a head when Neville said:

> "Trent is now being left out for \[Tino\] Livramento and Djed Spence. Let's be clear."

But Carragher wouldn't let that comment go unopposed.

> "Livramento is a good full-back."It doesn't matter what we say. Go back to that quote. What the manager is saying and what is important to him in a full-back and what he is thinking in the latter stages of tournaments."He is saying something you have been saying and what we have all said and maybe he is sending a message to Trent. He has got to be more serious about his defending."He is saying it there. You think of the impact Trent's had at Liverpool with Klopp and winning European Cups and leagues, some of the players you mentioned there - Livramento and Djed Spence - probably aren't going to get to that level.

>

> "That is not a criticism, I think they are both really good full-backs and I am a big fan of Livramento. It might just be a case of the manager saying: 'Trent, I love you, but come on!'

Who'd have thought Jamie Carragher would be the voice of reason?

----------------------------------------------------------------

As Carragher eluded to, Trent Alexander-Arnold has often had his defensive capabilities called into question.

There can be no doubt that he's excellent at getting forward and supporting attacks, but nobody can really deny that both Reece James and Tino Livramento are more effective as defenders while still being more than capable of supporting the attack.

We've no doubt Trent will be in the World Cup squad next year, but his inclusion shouldn't be automatic like Gary Neville seems to suggest. Hat's off to you, Jamie Carragher for speaking sense.
