Report: How Isak's £125m move to Liverpool is structured as 'open' Newcastle secret emerges

Newcastle United have not received the full £125million from Liverpool for Alexander Isak yet.

The Magpies finally agreed to sell the 25-year-old on transfer deadline day, with Alexander Isak joining Liverpool for a British record fee.

The deal saw Newcastle United lower their valuation, having initially wanted £150million for the Sweden international.

But the situation changed once Newcastle decided it was in the club’s best interests to sell, and now Isak is ready to start his Liverpool career.

As for Newcastle United, they will have to wait a few more years to receive the entire transfer fee they negotiated for a player who no longer wanted to be at St James’ Park.

Liverpool are paying Newcastle United in instalments for Alexander Isak

As Isak prepares to make his Liverpool debut against Burnley on Sunday, new details regarding his move from St James’ Park to Anfield have emerged.

According to the Times, the £125million fee that Liverpool agreed to pay for Isak will be spread evenly across the next three years.

The deal is being paid for in instalments, with the Reds paying Newcastle £30.25million this summer. They will then pay the same amount every 12 months for the next three years.

By 2028, Newcastle United will have finally received Isak’s transfer fee in its entirety.

The ‘open secret’ about Alexander Isak

For the majority of 2025, Newcastle United were adamant that Isak was not going to be sold.

That sounded like it would be the case, as it did not emerge that Isak wanted to leave Newcastle until July.

But the news broke when the rest of the Newcastle United squad were travelling to Asia, blindsiding Eddie Howe after initially keeping the situation behind closed doors.

However, the Times report that it was an ‘open secret’ within football that Isak was unsettled on Tyneside.

The reason for him being unsettled was his contract, with Amanda Staveley promising Isak a new deal. However, that decision was reversed by Paul Mitchell following Staveley’s departure.

Interestingly, Geordie Boot Boys reported in March that Liverpool were confident about signing Isak from Newcastle. Perhaps the reason for that confidence has just become a little bit clearer.
