NFL makes decision on discipline for Lamar Jackson over incident with fan

Lamar Jackson got into a brief physical altercation with a fan during Sunday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, but the NFL has decided that disciplinary action against the star quarterback is not warranted.

A Ravens official told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Thursday that the team is handling the situation internally.

“Our player’s safety is of the utmost importance. We have spoken to Lamar, who understands the impact of the situation, about the incident,” the official said. “While we will keep internal matters private, we have implemented additional security protocols — both at home and on the road — to better protect our players and handle negative fan interactions moving forward.”

An NFL spokesperson then told Schefter that the Ravens have addressed the incident and no further action from the league will be taken.

And the NFL will not fine Lamar Jackson for his interaction Sunday night with a Bills fan. “The matter has been addressed by the club and there is no further action from the league,” per NFL official Brian McCarthy. https://t.co/YYC44ZvREK

ESPN cameras showed a heated exchange between Jackson and a fan late in the third quarter of the Bills’ 41-40 win over the Ravens at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y. Baltimore players were celebrating behind the end zone after DeAndre Hopkins caught a touchdown pass from Jackson late in the third quarter when a fan reached over and made aggressive contact with Hopkins and then Jackson. The quarterback responded by shoving the fan.

It was initially unclear why Jackson shoved the fan, but replays showed that the reaction was justified. The fan, who was clearly looking for trouble, first hit Hopkins on the head and then shoved Jackson in the chest. Jackson simply returned the favor.

Jackson admitted after the game that he let his emotions get the best of him and that he should “let security handle it” in situations like that. The two-time NFL MVP later offered an apology and some advice to the fan.

On Monday, a Bills official revealed that the fan has been indefinitely banned from Bills games and all NFL stadiums.
