Although Trevor Lawrence showed improvement in the win over the Carolina Panthers, he also left a bit to be desired. Heck, the Jacksonville Jaguars came out on top in the season opener because of their fierce defense and their commitment to running the football. Moving forward, No. 16 will need to play better if the Jags want to beat better teams. For the time being, he's suffered a tumble in quarterback rankings.
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports ranked Lawrence 23rd among quarterbacks after Week 1, pointing out that the former Clemson Tiger made strides but was also inconsistent.
Granted, Lawrence moved up one spot in The Ringer's ranking, going from No. 15 to No. 14. Then again, the Jags would surely want him to play better moving forward.
The Jaguars should expect more from Trevor Lawrence
Head coach Liam Coen, for his part, acknowledges that Trevor Lawrence missed a few throws in the opener. That said, he believes his quarterback fared well when you take into account that he's getting used to a lot of new elements.
Lawrence, on the other hand, believes he needs to be more consistent moving forward, noting that he can play better than he did in the opener.
"Just more and more consistency. I think I felt very prepared going to the game, knew the plan, knew the plan really well, and I thought we had a good plan, Lawrence told the local media ahead of Week 2 (8:15 mark). "And I think, just from a passing game standpoint, I'm just being a little more consistent. I thought I left a few out there for sure that I can make just couple more plays. Obviously, the turnover is something you want to have back and limit those."
Lawrence continued, "If we can take care of the ball and play like we did, and especially as well as the defense plays, we should be able to win a lot of games if we can do that. So just taking care of the ball in that situation, long yardage, just doing the smart thing. So there's a couple plays that I think just finding a little bit more consistency is really the objective for me. It's just every play treating it as its own."
"Continue to play like that throughout the whole game, don't have a series or two where I feel like I missed a couple throws or mentally kind of get off a little bit, just stay consistent as sharp."
It's important to point out that Lawrence wasn't dreadful. He did enough to help the Jaguars win, but as he himself noted, he needs to be more consistent if the Jaguars want to start a winning streak.
Now, it's too early in the season, so Trevor Lawrence has ample time to make strides. Having said that, the Jags will next face the Bengals, and their odds of winning will increase if their franchise quarterback is locked in.
