Jason Collins, NBA's first out gay player, diagnosed with brain tumor

Former NBA center Jason Collins, who was the first out player in the league, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor, per TMZ. He is currently undergoing treatment.

"Jason and his family welcome your support and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as they dedicate their attention to Jason's health and well-being," his family said in a statement through the NBA, per ESPN.

In his 13-year career, Collins played with the Nets, Grizzlies, Timberwolves, Hawks, Celtics, and Wizards. He came out in 2013, becoming the first active athlete in one of North America's four major sports leagues to come out publicly. He retired in 2014.

Collins has been in a relationship with film producer Brunson Green since 2014, and they married in 2025. Collins is 46 years old.

The Nets have released a statement on social media, saying, "Sending our love and support to @jasoncollins98 and his family."
