Heat signs four players. They will compete for an open two-way contract

The Heat completed its roster, at least for now, on Thursday, when four players accepted training camp invitations.

Guards Jahmir Young, Mark Madsen and Trevor Keels and forward Dain Dainja signed Exhibit 10 contracts, which come with small guarantees and training camp invites. Miami now has the maximum 21 players under contract for training camp, which begins Sept. 30 in Palm Beach County.

While 18 players (15 on standard contracts and three on two-way contracts) is the regular-season limit, NBA teams are allowed to carry up to 21 players during the offseason and preseason (including as many as three players on two-way contrats).

All four of Thursday’s additions are long shots to be converted to a standard contract, but one of the four could land a two-way contract that allows a player to appear in 50 NBA games.

Teams can sign three players to two-way contracts, and Miami has one of those slots available. Center Vlad Golden and forward Myron Gardner previously were signed to two-way contracts.

Young, a 6-2, 185-pound guard out of Maryland, went undrafted in 2024 and agreed to a two-way contract with the Bulls on Feb. 19. He appeared in six games for Chicago and shot 4 for 5 from the field in 30 minutes.

In the G League last season, he averaged 22.4 points for Grand Rapids and 20 points on 44.5% shooting (39.7 on threes) for the Windy City Bulls.

During Summer League in Las Vegas, he averaged 13.6 points on 53.5% shooting (56.3% on threes) in 20.1 minutes per game for the Bulls. He played 152 collegiate games at University of Charlotte 49ers (2019-22) and the University of Maryland (2022-24).

The 6-5 Keels, who was drafted 42nd overall by the Knicks in 2022, appeared in three games for the Knicks as a rookie and spent the past two seasons in the G League. He averaged 11.5 points in one season at Duke.

The 6-5 Madsen, who went undrafted this past June, played two games at Cincinnati as a freshman before transferring to Utah, where he appeared in 120 games and started 103. He averaged 15.2 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists last season while shooting 37.1% from the field and 32.2% on threes.

That 32.2% accuracy was well below 39.3, 36.9 and 38.6% he shot on threes the previous three seasons. For his career, Madsen shot 36% on threes (315 and 874) and became Utah’s career leader in that area.

Dainja, who went undrafted out of Memphis in July, played limited minutes for the Heat’s Summer League team in Las Vegas, averaging 9.2 points (on 59.3% shooting from the field) and 2.6 rebounds and 13.4 minutes per game. He never played more than 17 minutes in a game and scored 13 points in that game against the Lakers.

At 6-9 and 255 pounds, Dainja averaged 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 61.5% from the field as a senior at Memphis last season, after previously playing one year at Baylor and two at Illinois.

In the weeks before the draft, the NCAA denied Dainja’s waiver request for an additional season of eligibility.

The 14 players signed by the Heat to standard contracts for this season are Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, Terry Rozier, Norman Powell, Davion Mitchell, Simone Fontecchio, Nikola Jovic, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Pelle Larsson, Dru Smith and Keshad Johnson.
