The Jets played well in their season opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and will look to build on that performance as they host the Buffalo Bills in an AFC East clash on Sunday.
Buffalo is coming off a come-from-behind 41-40 win over the Ravens, and will be looking to establish more dominance over a Jets team they've beaten in eight out of the last 10 meetings between the teams.
Here are the biggest stories to watch as the Jets look to avoid an 0-2 start to the season...
Ed Oliver vs. Quinnen Williams
Each of these teams selected a stud defensive tackle with a top 10 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, with Quinnen Williams going to the Jets with the third overall pick and Ed Oliver selected at No. 9.
Since that time, Oliver has been a solid player, but he's been in Williams' shadow to an extent. Oliver has yet to be voted to a Pro Bowl and is earning $17 million per year, while Williams has made three Pro Bowl appearances and earns $24 million per season.
In Week 1, each had a monster game, with Oliver in particular looking like he might take his game to another level this season. This could be an interesting battle, as Oliver will be motivated to prove he's on Williams' level.
Can the Jets dominate on the ground?
While the Bills did an impressive job of displaying how they can never be counted out, one concern from their win over the Ravens has to be the fact that they gave up 231 yards on the ground.
The Bills struggled to deal with the dual threat of Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson, which may bode well for a Jets offense that also looks capable of racking up big yardage on the ground. While Breece Hall and Justin Fields might not strike the same level of fear into opposing teams, they bring similar things to the table stylistically -- and the Jets racked up an impressive 182 rushing yards against the Steelers.
Will Elijah Moore make an impact against his old team?
Moore's departure from New York was ignominious, as he had clashed with coaches and requested a trade because he felt he was being misused. He would no doubt be keen to make a significant contribution against his former team.
The Bills signed Moore this offseason and he played a minor role in the Ravens game, as he took just 12 offensive snaps. He had 11 yards and one first down on two touches. However, Cris Collinsworth noted during the broadcast that he had been heavily featured in practice, so could the Bills be working towards making him one of Josh Allen's top targets?
Will Aaron Glenn fix the issues in the secondary?
The Jets were solid on defense most of the time but there were too many breakdowns in coverage in Sunday's game, notably on crossing routes where they struggled to pass off open receivers.
The communication must be better, especially with Allen posing a running threat that makes it risky to remain in man coverages.
Rookies Azareye'h Thomas and Malachi Moore are waiting in the wings if Glenn opts to make a personnel change. However, it may be a little early for that.
What changes will there be in the return game?
Xavier Gipson's fourth-quarter fumble was the only turnover in Sunday's game, and it set up a touchdown which gave the Steelers their first lead since early in the second quarter.
He paid the price on Wednesday, as the Jets opted to release him. Unless he is signed back to the practice squad and elevated for Sunday's game, the Jets will have a different look this week.
With Kene Nwangwu dealing with a hamstring injury, the Jets may need someone else to step up. They have options, including elevating Jamaal Pritchett and Keilan Robinson from the practice squad. However, Pritchett is more of a punt returner and Robinson only joined the team on Tuesday. The on-roster options such as Isaiah Davis and Arian Smith lack experience.
Ironically, the Bills' return specialist is Brandon Codrington, who was in camp with the Jets last year, but they traded him.
