Jameson Williams Stays in Detroit
Jameson Williams opened up about his contract extension, saying his decision wasn’t about money but about loyalty to his teammates and the city. “I found a home here… I wouldn’t want to do it with anybody else,” he said.
Loyalty Over Money
Williams downplayed the financial side of the extension. “Money don’t motivate me… where I come from motivates me,” he explained, saying his focus is on honoring the name on his jersey and providing for his family.
Jameson Williams signed a 3-year, $83,000,000 contract with the Detroit Lions on Sunday Sept 7th, including $67,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $27,666,667. In 2025, Williams will earn a base salary of $2,636,153, a roster bonus of $450,000 and a workout bonus of $7,246, while carrying a cap hit of $5,426,055.
The 24-year-old still has two years left on his rookie contract, including the fifth-year option, but this three-year deal locks in the dynamic playmaker as a key part of Detroit’s core. The extension will begin once those two years are up.
Building Something Special in Detroit
He credited the culture shift in Detroit since his rookie season, saying fan support has stayed strong even during tough times. “It’s not too much different from home… I just feel comfortable.”
Williams has been receiving plenty of praise from teammates and coaches for his steady improvement heading into the new season. Under the guidance of new offensive coordinator John Morton, he’s expanding his route tree and earning recognition for his impressive body control and increased strength.
“He’s gotten better every year, he’s matured,” Morton previously said of Williams. “It’s tough for a young receiver to come into this league, because they don’t run a lot of different routes in college.
“And now he’s progressed through, and I want to take that skillset, and now isolate him. I think he’s been phenomenal. Again, we’re still scripting, we’re giving the young guys more reps to get them prepared for the preseason. I’m very excited where he’s at right now. He’s going to help us win some big games, obviously.”
