Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is “all in” on the Broncos plan to build a new stadium at Burnham Yard.
He shared that on “The Rundown with Richie Carni” on Thursday, as the Broncos, the city of Denver and the state of Colorado are hoping to have a state-of-the-art stadium ready to go for the 2031 NFL season.
It’s an exciting time, as many people are thrilled the team intends to play their home games in Denver city limits, rather than moving to the suburbs.
And while Mike Johnston shared a lot of good stuff during his interview with Carni, it’s another comment he made that is an intriguing one. Denver might soon become title town with the Broncos, Avalanche and Nuggets.
“I feel like, you know, we are a city that has a real legitimate shot at three title contender teams in the same city at the same time,” Johnston said.
The Avs last won a Stanley Cup in 2022, but still have the likes of Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Gabriel Landeskog, Valeri Nichushkin and others.
The Nuggets won their first championship in 2023, and whenever you have Nikola Jokic on the floor, you’ve got a shot.
And the Broncos are ascending, with head coach Sean Payton thinking a Super Bowl is possible this season. Mayor Mike Johnston is taking notice of all three teams.
“I don’t think that’s ever been true in my adult lifetime, and so I’m fired up,” Johnston said.
Even though the Broncos offense looked pedestrian in a Week 1 win over the Titans, the defense led the way in a 20-12 victory. For Johnston, that was a solid start with room for QB Bo Nix and that side of the ball to improve.
“I feel great about what’s gonna be a historic defense, and I’m excited about what I think’s gonna be an exciting offense,” Johnston said.
It’s a great time to be a sports fan in the city of Denver. We’ve had a couple of recent parades, but are starved for more. Mayor Mike Johnston has a hunch those are coming.
