Packers handle Commanders, improve to 2-0

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WSAW) - The Green Bay Packers are now 2-0. The Packers took down Washington 27-18 on Thursday to pick up their second win in five days.

The Packers jumped on the board first. Jordan Love delivered a pass to Romeo Doubs from five yards out to get Green Bay a touchdown. After a Brandon McManus extra point, the Packers led 7-0 with 3:35 to go in the first.

Green Bay’s defense anchored the hot start, keeping Washington at bay. The offense built off that, capitalizing on a terrific catch by Malik Heath for 37 yards. Later in the drive, Josh Jacobs punched in a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with 7:34 left in the half.

Trailing by two scores now, Washington followed up Green Bay’s scoring drive with one of their own. Matt Gay sunk a 51-yard field goal to get the Commanders on the board, trailing 14-3 with less than four minutes in the second.

Washington got the ball back before the end of the half, driving into Green Bay territory. However, Gay would miss a 58-yarder this time, giving Green Bay a shot for points right before the half. However, McManus would miss a field goal from 48, to end the half 14-3 in favor of the Packers.

The field goal war continued into the second half. Washington missed another field goal in their first drive as Gay clanged one off the goal post from 52. The Packers broke the miss streak on their next drive as McManus cashed in from 22 yards to put Green Bay’s lead back at 14. The 17-3 score held until the fourth quarter.

The Commanders picked up their first touchdown of the game shortly after the start of the fourth quarter. Jayden Daniels found Zach Ertz on a short pass before Ertz did the rest, scoring from 20 yards out. The extra point went through, making it 17-10 with 13:45 left in the game.

Now with it a one-score game, the Packers got back to work on offense. Love engineered a drive down the field, ending in a touchdown strike to Tucker Kraft. The nine-play, 65-yard drive helped Green Bay extend its lead to 24-10.

With their backs against the wall, Washington needed to score to stay in the game. The Packers’ defense instead delivered, stopping the Commanders on a fourth down, giving them the ball back with good field position. McManus would connect on his second field goal of the night, this time from 56, to put the Packers up 17.

Still with time, Washington drove the field fairly quickly to tack on a score. Deebo Samuels hauled in a touchdown pass to get the game back to two possessions. The two-point try was good, making it 27-18 with less than three minutes to go.

Washington would get another late shot with the ball, but it was too little, too late as the Packers went on to win 27-18.

Jordan Love finished the game 19-31 for 292 yards and two touchdowns. Kraft led the receivers with 124 yards and a touchdown catch. The Packers defense held it down, sacking Daniels four times.

The Packers are now 2-0. They’ll play Cleveland in their next game on Sept. 21.
